Our PositionThe Ecology Foundation has set as its mission, “to reduce Ireland’s CO2 emissions while at the same time, preserving economic growth.” Our view is that the current debate on climate change is being misdirected. Many voices are calling for action without specifying how to deliver results. We get the message, now it is time for solutions, i.e. emission reduction solutions. Much of the focus is on subjects such as energy efficiencies and development of renewable energy sources. These are important initiatives but only the first step and the way the debate is currently progressing, these initiatives deflect attention from core issues. We will continue to depend on fossil fuels for a long time to come and we need to redirect the debate to making changes that will make a difference. The real challenges are issues such as power generation which alone, accounts for 42% of all damaging emissions. Solutions exist so why are they not discussed in Ireland? The debate needs to be business-friendly because the solutions will be implemented in the business world. However, for certain reasons, the climate change debate is noticeably anti-business, anti-consumerist and anti-profit. A new information source is needed for this debate. The Ecology Foundation has teamed up with NUI Maynooth to fund a team of researchers who will identify the best-of-breed solutions and best practice from around the globe and bring pragmatic solutions to the Irish agenda in a new and properly focussed debate on Climate Change. We are working with Prof. John Sweeney at NUIM in this work. |
